Hypermobility Physiotherapy in St Albans

Redrock Physio

Support for children and adults with flexible joints, recurring pain or fatigue.

Helping you manage movement, pain and performance

Some people are naturally more flexible than others. But if this flexibility starts to cause pain, instability or frequent injury, it might be linked to hypermobility. At Redrock Physio in St Albans, we assess and support children and adults with hypermobility to improve strength, reduce discomfort and regain control.

What is Hypermobility?

Hypermobility means your joints move more than expected. For some, it's harmless. For others, it can lead to:

  • Aching or painful joints

  • Muscle fatigue or weakness

  • Poor balance or co-ordination

  • Recurring strains, sprains, or joint subluxations

In more complex cases, it may be part of Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) or Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS).

We use simple tools like the Beighton Score to check joint mobility and identify hypermobility. Children and adults are assessed differently, taking into account age and activity.

Signs to Look Out For

  • Joint pain or stiffness, especially after long periods of sitting or standing

  • Being told you're 'double-jointed'

  • Repeated joint injuries, even during low-impact activity

  • Needing to stretch constantly

  • Fatigue, clumsiness, or feeling 'unsteady'

  • Discomfort during exams or long desk work (common in teens and students)

Our Assessment Approach

For children: we use a screening method called pGALS and observe movement, posture, and development.

For adults: we assess posture, range of movement, muscle tone, strength, and control, alongside the Beighton Score and functional tasks.

This gives a full picture of how hypermobility affects day-to-day movement.

We’ll work closely with you to build strength, improve control, and address the challenges that hypermobility can bring to daily life.

Supporting Children and Teens

Young people with hypermobility may feel clumsy, sore or unusually tired. They might struggle to sit comfortably during exams or PE lessons. We offer:

  • Advice on posture and pacing

  • Play-based strength and balance exercises

  • Help with managing growth spurts or changes during puberty

We also liaise with schools or other healthcare professionals if needed. A written report can be provided to support school-based adjustments or confirm a diagnosis of hypermobility. There is a £30 charge per report.
